Control a Headless Mac Mini From Your iPhone
Published 2026-09-26 · Updated 2026-10-05
You can control a headless Mac mini from your iPhone when the mini lives on a shelf or in a rack: install the helper once, pair the phone, and use Screen, Trackpad, typing, tiles, or Ask without a dedicated desk keyboard.
Headless setup checklist
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Install macOS 14 Sonoma or later on the mini (Apple silicon or Intel). |
| 2 | Attach power and Ethernet or Wi-Fi. Keep a monitor or HDMI dummy plug handy in case the mini reports no display to stream. |
| 3 | Download the Poket PC helper from Mac and move it to Applications (setup offers Move to Applications). |
| 4 | Allow Accessibility: System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility. |
| 5 | Allow Screen Recording (labeled Screen & System Audio Recording on macOS 15+), then click Reopen in the helper’s menu, or quit and reopen Poket PC. |
| 6 | Turn on Open Poket PC when I log in in setup (Launch at login in the menu). If the menu shows Approve in Login Items…, allow Poket PC in System Settings › General › Login Items. |
| 7 | Install the iPhone app from the public TestFlight beta on beta. Version 1.0 is in App Review, not on the App Store yet. |
| 8 | On the mini: menu bar › Pair New Device; on iPhone: scan the QR code, check the six-digit code matches, and tap Codes match — Pair. |

Which view to use on a mini
- Passwords and short text in apps — tap Type for the keyboard; use Trackpad to click fields. The login window and lock screen are out of reach in 1.0.
- Server-style maintenance — Live screen to read dialogs. Only the main display streams, at 30 fps.
- Everyday media — Action tiles on the Deck for Music, Play/Pause, and volume.
- Automation — Ask with Claude Code or Ollama, plus schedules that run on the mini itself. Scheduled runs never touch the screen: they work from the agent’s memory and notes. On the Claude subscription, scheduled runs end without an answer in 1.0.
Careful with Lock and Sleep
The Deck has a Lock tile, and Edit adds a Sleep tile. On a mini nobody sits at, both end remote control. Poket PC 1.0 cannot operate the lock screen, has no wake control, and cannot reach a sleeping Mac through the relay. Someone has to be at the mini to bring it back.
Reach from another network
After pairing, works anywhere handles cellular and office Wi-Fi; you don’t set up port forwarding or a VPN. Revoke a lost phone from the mini’s menu bar; the session ends immediately.
Limits to plan around
- No iPad app in 1.0 (planned).
- No file transfer or clipboard sync in 1.0 (planned).
- Keyboard does not send Cmd/Ctrl shortcuts yet (planned). Use Ask, or a tile when one covers the action.
- The mini must stay awake: asleep, it is unreachable until it wakes, and 1.0 has no keep-awake setting. Set macOS not to sleep.
- After a restart, the helper starts only once someone logs in to the mini.

Frequently asked questions
Can I control my Mac mini from my iPhone?
Yes, with the Poket PC helper on the mini and the iPhone app paired. You can see the main display, use trackpad and keyboard, tap tiles, and use Ask.
Can I remote control a Mac mini without a monitor?
Yes, once the helper is running and someone has logged in. Poket PC streams the display macOS reports as main; if the mini reports no display at all, Screen has nothing to show and the app warns that screen capture failed. A monitor or an HDMI dummy plug gives macOS a display.
Do I need to be on the same Wi-Fi?
No, not even to pair. On the same Wi-Fi the app connects directly; elsewhere it uses the encrypted relay without port forwarding.
How do I type a password on a headless mini?
In apps and dialogs, tap Type under Trackpad or Deck and type. Version 1.0 sends text plus Return and Delete, not shortcut keys. It cannot reach the login window or the lock screen, so the mini must already be logged in and unlocked.
Is controlling a Mac mini free?
Poket PC 1.0 is free with no ads and no in-app purchases.
