Yes. On the same network it connects directly; away from it, it goes through a relay that forwards encrypted bytes without being able to read them. You don't open ports or run a VPN.
No. The screen and your keystrokes are encrypted between your own devices. The relay sees ciphertext, the routing token it needs to put two connections together, and what any server sees: IP addresses, message sizes and timing. Never the screen or what you type.
