Chrome Remote Desktop on iPhone: What Happened

2026-09-26 · Godwin Agbane

Google’s Chrome Remote Desktop was a common free answer to “control my Mac from my iPhone.” The native iOS app is gone; if you relied on it, you have already seen deprecation messages or a missing App Store listing. This post lays out a dated timeline from public sources, what Google offers instead, and what to weigh if you are choosing a replacement for Mac control from an iPhone.

Android is a different story: the Play Store app remained available and received updates (last updated 2026-02-25, per the Play Store listing). iPhone users are on the mobile web app.

What Google wants iPhone users to do now

Per Google’s iPhone help content, if you do not already have the deprecated app, you open remotedesktop.google.com/access in the browser and can add it to the Home Screen for a fuller view. That flow requires Google sign-in; we observed remotedesktop.google.com/access redirecting to Google Accounts on 26 September 2026.

Limitations worth knowing for Mac hosts (from Google’s own documentation and support threads):

  • On iPhone, touch modes for Mac hosts use virtual trackpad behavior, not direct touch mapping like Windows hosts.
  • Curtain mode (hiding the session from someone at the Mac) does not work on macOS Big Sur or later.
  • Google’s help text still mentions downloading the iOS app in places, which no longer matches the store.

Encryption is described by Google as sessions being “fully encrypted,” with WebRTC direct or relayed through Google data centers; Google’s network guide does not spell out whether relayed traffic is unreadable by Google in the same way Poket PC’s relay is designed not to hold keys. See Security for our model.

Migration checklist if you leave CRD

  1. List what you used CRD for — quick support to family, unattended Mac at home, or daily personal control.
  2. Decide whether you need a native iPhone app — the browser path works for some people; others want a native app.
  3. Install a Mac host agent — for Poket PC, that is the free notarized helper with Accessibility and Screen Recording permissions.
  4. Pair without a cloud account — Poket PC uses QR and a six-digit code; no Google login.
  5. Test away from home — confirm relay path works on cellular without router changes.

We maintain a Chrome Remote Desktop comparison and an alternatives roundup with dated tables.

Where Poket PC fits

Poket PC targets your Mac and your iPhone, not IT inventory. Version 1.0 is free with no ads. Connections are end-to-end encrypted; the relay matches by token and copies ciphertext, and sees metadata such as IP addresses, timing and sizes, not content (deep dive). You get screen, trackpad, keyboard, tiles, and Ask in one app.

Tradeoffs to weigh fairly:

  • CRD supports more host OS types (Windows, Linux) and a free Google-backed relay; you accept Google accounts and the iPhone browser experience today.
  • Poket PC is Mac-only for the host in 1.0, with a native iPhone app (public TestFlight beta now; version 1.0 in App Review), no account, and no Windows host yet (in development).

Poket PC 1.0 sends only the Mac’s main display; multi-monitor is planned. CRD has its own Mac limitations around curtain mode.

Other paths people mention

  • Apple Screen Sharing plus a VNC app — works, often needs VPN or port forwarding off-LAN.
  • TeamViewer, AnyDesk, Jump Desktop, Splashtop — mature clients with their own pricing and account models; see /compare/.
  • Tailscale or similar plus VNC — you bring the network; Poket PC avoids running your own VPN for pairing.

Getting started with Poket PC

  1. Download the Mac helper.
  2. Join the public iPhone beta in TestFlight from the beta page.
  3. Follow how to control Mac from iPhone for pairing.
